John is Director and Head of Transport Planning at Urban Movement, a consultancy specialising in transport strategies and the design of urban streets and spaces. With a Transport MSc from Imperial/UCL and a background in traffic engineering, he has 39 years of professional experience. Having first worked in transport consultancy and then at the London Borough of Newham, he joined urban design practice Urban Movement in 1996 and founded Urban Movement in 2011.

A champion of healthy streets and genuinely sustainable transport strategy, John’s professional reputation is based on work that encompasses the conception, design, execution and management of a wide range of transport, traffic and street projects in towns, cities and new developments across the UK, as well as numerous related research studies. He is currently leading the development of a comprehensive Movement Strategy for Sunderland City Centre, in close collaboration with Council officers.

John is a transport and design advisor to several UK authorities, a past Chair of the Transport Planning Society, a former trustee of Living Streets, and was the only transport specialist in the first cohort of London Mayor’s Design Advocates. He has been author of the ‘Street Talk’ column in Local Transport Today since 2005.
