Zuhair Mehrali
Bio
Zuhair Mehrali is a Birmingham-born multimedia artist and designer who blends mixed-media and moving image. His work often engages with the complexities of belonging and fragmented identity in a rapidly changing world.
His projects Sketches (2017) and Recollection (2019) were multimodal digital experiences exploring identity and transnationalism by combining charcoal sketches, archival film, and oral history recordings. More recently he has created a collection of surrealist animations, Anipaintings (2022-2024), as a result of ongoing experimentation with animation, CGI, and sound.
Synopsis
Anipaintings (2022-2024) is a collection of surrealist animations that put fine art in motion. They vary conceptually, are calibrated by mood, and are presented with a hand-painted finish which retains as much of the texture and palpability of a physical painting as possible. Each piece is inspired by existing physical artworks, and is created using computer graphics and animation techniques.
